Jervis Arms

~3 min drive

Our village local, a mile up the lane in Onecote — genuinely family run, by Kirsten and Richard, with Richard cooking alongside their son. Guests keep coming back as much for the service as the food; between them they've years of catering experience, and it shows. Booking recommended for the restaurant.

The Lazy Trout

~10 min

In Meerbrook, best reached after a walk around Tittesworth Reservoir. Jason rates the fish and chips here as some of the best he's had anywhere — dedicated chip shops and the Magpie aside — genuinely worth the drive on its own.

The Black Lion, Butterton

~8 min

A proper village pub with a chef guests specifically praise for his sauces. Sunday lunch is the one to book for — the gravy alone is worth the drive.

Denstone Hall Farm Shop & Café

~15 min

Worth the slightly longer drive — recently voted one of the best farm shops in the country, with a café attached. Guests who've detoured here after a disappointing local market have been glad they did.

Walks & landmarks

Thor's Cave

~15 min

A dramatic natural cave above the Manifold Valley, and one of the walks guests most often mention doing during their stay — usually as part of a longer circular route.

The Roaches

~18 min drive

Gritstone ridge with some of the best views in the Staffordshire Moorlands, and serious rock climbing if that's your thing. The view back towards Rudyard Lake is the one on our own Explore page.

Manifold Valley

~15 min

The valley walk connecting Wetton, Wetton Mill and Thor's Cave — flat enough for an easy afternoon, with a good café at Wetton Mill to aim for.

Water & views

Tittesworth Reservoir

~10 min

A level, well-marked walk around the water, popular with guests looking for something gentler than a moorland hike — and a good excuse to end up at the Lazy Trout afterwards.
